SIXTEEN

The Hemlock Cove contingent—which consisted of Bay, Tillie, Easton, and Evan—arrived just as I was finishing my shift. Easton tried to herd them upstairs, but Tillie had other ideas.

“I heard you’re vlogging,” she said as she sidled over to my grandfather, who had ceded his position behind the grill and was eating a bowl of chili next to the freezer. “I’m trying my hand at it.”

Grandpa eyed her with a mixture of suspicion and amusement. “I guarantee my content will be better.”

Tillie didn’t look convinced. “How? I’m much more colorful. I actually have sidekicks.”

Grandpa’s forehead creased. “I have grandchildren. Do you have grandchildren?”

“One. He’s not technically a grandchild, but close enough. He’s not very cute.”

Bay made a face. “Hey! Calvin is very cute.”

From what I understood, Tillie had been appalled—downright nasty, really—when Clove gave birth to a boy instead of a girl. Apparently, that was unheard of in the Winchester family. Tillie had warmed to the baby some, but not as much as the family hoped.

“Sidekicks are better than grandchildren,” Tillie said to Grandpa. “And my sidekicks are hot.” She gestured to Easton and Evan. “That will bring in the female viewers. I’m going to make them pose for thirst traps and everything.”

“What’s a thirst trap?” Grandpa asked me.

“It’s when a hot guy—or girl, but in this case a guy—poses in a sexy position,” I replied.

“I’m going to make them pose with their shirts off,” Tillie said. “People will flock to my posts. Let’s see your raggedy grandchildren do that.” She sent him one more haughty look and then headed for the alcove that led to my apartment. “We’ll be upstairs.”

I ran my tongue over my teeth as I waited for Grandpa to explode. “Why is she taking advantage of your sidekick?” Grandpa asked. “That one guy is yours. We should get to use him.”

“He’s not my sidekick,” I replied. “He’s my roommate.” That didn’t sound right, but I couldn’t think of another way to refer to Easton.

Grandpa shook his head. “He’s your sidekick. I want you to ban him from working with that woman. We’ll have him do our thirst traps.”

“You don’t even know him,” I argued. “You’ve never made the effort to even talk to him.”

“It doesn’t matter. He’s on our team. Period.”

“Why not make one of the others do your thirst trap photos?” I demanded. There was no way I was telling Tillie she couldn’t use Easton. Whatever deal they’d worked out was their business.

“What others?” Grandpa looked confused.

“You know, my cousins.”

Grandpa snorted and looked as if he was going to burst out laughing. “You’ve seen your cousins,” he said in a reasonable voice. “They’re not thirst trap material.”

“I can’t wait to tell David that,” I said, referring to my closest male cousin.

“Hey, he’s a good worker, and he’ll make a good husband when he’s done sowing his wild oats,” Grandpa replied. “But he’s no thirst trap. Heck, you’re taller than he is.”

That wasn’t entirely true, but it was close. “Just … let’s move on to something else,” I suggested.
